The light had already turned red. Instead of slowing to a stop, Camille punched the gas to fly through the intersection. Before she made it through, a truck t-boned her from the right, sending her car crashing into another before flipping over. The entire event took less than twenty seconds but from her perspective, it may as well have been an hour. Given the car predated protective glass, her left arm was decorated with shrapnel from the driver's side window. Intense pain radiated from her left shoulder and the ringing in her ears prevented her from hearing the surrounding tumult.

In that moment, all she could think of was Benjamin Grieg and how this would alter their plans. Anger built to rage which exploded from her body in a wail of mental and physical agony.

As the red halo of anger faded from her vision, it dawned on her the car was upside down and the only thing keeping her from falling on her head was the seatbelt. When she attempted to unbuckle, pain prevented her from reaching the latch of the belt. Frustration took over and she pounded the roof with her right fist, screaming for help all the while.

After a protracted wait, a member of the fire department appeared in her window.

"Ma'am? Can you hear me?"

"Yes." Her voice was growing weak.

"We'll have you out in a moment. Can you tell me your name?"

She hesitated, uncertain if giving the man her real name was wise. The idea of confessing such information on the day she was to undertake yet another killing seemed like begging to be taken into custody, and she knew Aaron wouldn't approve. At the same time, it wasn't like anyone would—or could—ever catch them. They were invincible, untouchable.

"Camille," the two syllables slipped from her lips before her brain could draw a conclusion. "What's your name?"

"Officer Alexander Bernardi."

"Nice to meet…" Before she could finish the statement, Camille passed out.

"I need the jaws, now!" Alexander shouted over the din. "Driver's unconscious."

A pair of firefighters arrived, one carrying the tool, the other ready to help in any way necessary. It took less than two minutes for them to pry the door of the car open and cut Camille loose from her bindings. After calling for a board, they strapped her down and carried her to the ambulance that had only just arrived.

"Here's her bag." Alexander handed the small pack to the EMT in the back of the emergency vehicle and walked back toward the incident.

The ambulance closed up and drove off, lights flashing and siren blaring. As the van headed toward the nearest hospital, the EMTs began working on Camille, assessing the damage and doing everything they could to ensure her survival.

"Aaron," Camille whispered through the fog of whatever pain relief they'd injected into her system. "Our plans."

"It's okay, ma'am. We're going to take care of you."

"Benjamin…" Her voice faded before she could utter the last name.

The ambulance arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital. Camille was wheeled in and taken directly to the ED where she'd be assessed, cared for, and held overnight for various tests.
